I would like to share the "WHY" behind my joining the VFW and my efforts since joining. I served in the Army for 24 years and the Air National Guard for 3 years. Upon my Retirement in 2019 I was seeking the comradeship that I had while serving. I was approached by a VFW member upon return from Afghanistan and was asked would I like to join. At first like most I was thinking they just want my money and it's a place to sit and drink. I was so wrong.  After joining I was inactive to any post until closer to my retirement. At first it was a safe place to have a cold drink and relax from my daily work. Once I retired and didn't have the connection of the other members of my unit, I realized I needed to find more. I found my local Post and began to inquire of how I could help out and what we as a Post actually do. Upon finding out we provided Veterans support such as food, clothes, and just downhome friendships, I was hooked. I started as an Adjutant to learn and take notes of what we did and how we did it. I then began to try to find more ways to help and support. As I did this, I was asked to become the Junior Vice Commander, then the Senior and for a short time the Commander. I then found a Post closer to my home and transferred to be able to be more active. I was immediately brought in as the Quartermaster to manage the finances for the Post. I was then voted in as Commander. As I sit as Commander now, I am finding that I gain peace at every corner, every event and more than anything every conversation I have with Veterans. I am proud and happy to serve as the Commander to reach out to those in need and those who seek likeminded members to share stories and time. If you are a Veteran or a Family member of a Veteran, please take some time to speak with the local VFW members to see if this may be an alternative outreach you can get behind. I am always willing and will make myself available to discuss what the VFW does and what we can provide.
